HISTORY
Apple Growers Sports Club was founded in 2000 for Old Brutonians by Alex Baldwin, Duncan Weir and Harvey Douglas. It was formed so that old school friends could get together and keep in contact through playing sport. The Club first started by entering university rugby sevens tournaments. It proved so popular that at the Oxford Brookes Sevens Tournament in 2001, the club fielded three different squads, one of which ended up as runners up.
By 2004 the Apple Growers needed an identity and the club’s crest was invented.
Thanks to The Apple Tree Inn and Restaurant of Western Massachusetts who probably have no idea the crest modelled on their establishment. Just for reference purposes their “circular dining room affords year round panoramic views of the mountains and exceptional seasonal views. Many of the rooms have equally beautiful views and the view from the swimming pool is breathtaking.”
The crest is now fondly known as ‘the oak tree’,due to its similarity to the oak as opposed to any Apple Tree in Somerset, and remains one of the club's many perculiarities.
As the Club has moved on, so have its fixtures. The fixtures are now largely rugby fifteens matches against a mixture of Old Boys sides and rugby clubs. By 2004 the club had established annual fixtures against North Dorset RFC, Salisbury RFC and Milton Abbey Old Boys’ side, The Hornets. The success of the rugby led to the start of hockey and cricket fixtures in 2005 against The Sherborne Pilgrims and The Hornets respectively.
2005 was an important year for the Apple Growers. Not only did it see the start of hockey and cricket but the club went on its first
tour to Jersey playing rugby against Jersey RFC and cricket against Jersey Island CC. The tour was a huge success as a party of 28 Old Brutonians enjoyed a long weekend on the Channel Island winning the rugby 51-0, unfortunately losing in the cricket by 7 wickets, but most importantly won many friends and an invitation to play either club at any time in the future.
2005 saw the clubs first “home” fixture against The Hornets at Kings School Bruton winning 52-14 and also the clubs first rugby defeat against the same opposition a month later at Milton Abbey School 15-0. 2006 opened with the Apple Growers first visit to London to play Rosslyn Park. A cold damp afternoon in Richmond Park saw the rugby team win a closely fought match 5-10. The club is always looking for new members in any capacity, whether it be playing a sport or just supporting or organising. Although the club was formed for the purpose of Old Brutonians to keep in touch with each other, the club welcomes anyone to join.
